The Evolution Of Affiliate Marketing

Affiliate marketing used to be a very simple process. It used to simply follow the rule of “recommend and expect others to buy”. In more recent years, affiliate marketers have had to improve their creative streak because the only way to get other people to buy is to increase credibility and believability, make a good offer and over deliver on their promise.

As it stands now, many affiliate marketers who are just starting out are finding it more and more difficult to develop decent income stream from affiliate marketing. Obviously, this is no fault of the concept of affiliate marketing itself. It is true, however, that many Internet marketers are relying on methods that have a lower efficacy right now – for instance, selling through just writing a review without paying attention to traffic, or doing advertisements without proper pre-selling.

In my opinion, affiliate marketing has changed dramatically over the years and if someone is unaware of the changes in affiliate marketing, is not likely to succeed in this industry. Take for instance the times where it was easy to simply use Google Adwords and drive traffic from Google advertising to affiliate links. Using pay-per-click campaigns, many affiliate marketers what able to easily generate $5000-$6000 income on a monthly basis. Today, it is less easy and those who have actually owned that a mom in the cost default and become smarter in affiliate marketing.

What stands in most people’s way right now, is that the link in marketing has been lost. Everyone is now thinking of the “Internet” rather than on the
“marketing”. Traditionally, Internet marketers have been very intelligent about the way they generate traffic and convert them into buying customers. Nowadays, Internet marketers are stuck because instead of attempting to make a difference to the lives off the people they are marketing to, they just simply want to squeeze every last drop from their mailing list.

“Reseller marketing”, “distribution centers”, and creating “associates” for the purpose of marketing are not new concepts. When Amazon.com began to offer an associate program to help market that books, it was obvious that they wanted to leverage on their community of readers to drive more people to the store.

Today, the impact of affiliate marketing and associate marketing from Amazon’s standpoint is much less apparent. The people who actually make a decent living off selling Amazon books is dwindling. Why? The truth is, many affiliates are selling purely for the purpose of making money. Making money does not motivate people as much as knowing the person whom you sold something to enjoyed what was sold to them in the first place!

Today, affiliate marketing will require a new face. Social networking online has turned affiliate marketing on its head. Just as we need to be more innovative in order for of affiliate marketing to be more effective, we need to marry the affiliate marketing and social networking elements to make affiliate marketing results more powerful.

Instead of just running pay-per-click campaigns, we have to drive traffic to useful and targeted bait that makes them go “wow”. The concept of over delivering is becoming more and more popular because its works. An ebook doesn’t retail for $97 anymore. A two product bonus doesn’t work as well as a fifty product bonus.

As an affiliate marketer, you must learn to over deliver and play to the needs and play to the needs of your target market.
