How To Protect Yourself… Without Losing Out

I just encountered a dilemma recently, especially since I’ve been in the area of business for some time.

How do you know if someone is really out to cheat you? And if you have been cheated before, how would you protect yourself without being so skeptical that you destroy your chances of future success?

I think I have a unique solution.

The irony, however, is that the risks taken have to be based on being an open skeptic first. Those of you who are uncomfortable being a skeptic, just test this out and you will know what to do.

#1 – Ask for concrete terms, black and white.ÂÂ

If you were buying a business, you would need to know the business to make terms and conditions make sense. But if you are new, you might not know what to ask. So, you have to have concrete terms. This is by itself, however, is insufficient.

#2 – Get a third party expert to assess the value.

If you don’t have knowledge, get a third party expert to assess the value for you on your behalf. Usually, this third party expert can and will provide you with adequate information to make a choice about what to buy and not to buy. Value is typically assessed through people who have no vested interest, but have enough expert knowledge to guide you, and STILL have enough knowledge about the product or service being sold.

Sometimes, you can get people to provide references that you should call and speak to regarding the reliability of such a person’s product or service.

#3 – Demonstrate due diligence.

In making any purchase, YOU have to make the decisions. So do your homework properly. If you don’t have enough resources, it’s time to start building your resources and personal network now, today. Learn to use the net to surf. Remember, the net doesn’t always give you the information you need, so tap into community networks and ask questions.
