Have you ever got “Guru Disgust Syndrome”?
Here’s what most people are not aware of. I just read an email today, and it brought out the sensations of nausea, dizziness and fainting spells.
It’s called Guru Disgust Syndrome (GDS). So what exactly is GDS? I’m actually at this point thinking of putting this up on Wikipedia (lol).
Guru Disgust Syndrome, or also known as “GDS” is a physiological reaction to bullshit from people who claim to be experts in the field you are in. It often starts from the belly, has a churning feeling, and causes people to roll their eyes.
Isn’t it strange that there are so many experts in the field of internet marketing? One guy says “it’s your traffic!” the other guy says “it’s copywriting!” and yet another says “build your business systems!”
Give me a break!
The world of internet marketing is already confused as it is without you guys making such comments and forgetting to piece the whole puzzle together. One moment it’s this idea, then the other it’s another one. Who’s going to want to become proficient in IM with all the BS floating all over the place?
Don’t get me wrong – there are some guys who are really good at what they do. Wonder if you realize that those who are good at what they do tend to give you more than small pieces and bits at a time? They give you something that works in total. They are people whom I’ve had the opportunity to work with and seen their work specializations and been awed with it. The world needs more plain-speaking internet marketing experts, not gurus.
Forget those guys who give you pieces of info and then torture you by shredding them into smaller bits of info. You need more than that. You need someone to give you the big picture so no matter how complex the puzzle is, you have a direction.
Here’s a hint – if you want to learn internet marketing, you need to learn how the process flows. Step-by-step, A to Z. So, take out a piece of paper and a pen. Look at what people have been saying. And learn how to put the pieces together yourself.
I remember times when teachers in school would tell me things that I didn’t understand. Instead of blaming the teachers for it, I decided to do research myself. I even changed my learning approach by using speed reading techniques (I read about 6-7 books in a day) as well as note-taking strategies like mind mapping and process mapping to help me accelerate my understanding of a topic area.
So, if you can’t learn fast, it’s not that you are learning disabled, you are learning uninitiated. You haven’t even learnt the strategies for picking up this knowledge for heaven’s sake! No wonder it’s easy to be hoodwinked by yet another “guru”.
Hopefully, people will wake up and start taking mental notes. Don’t be mentally lazy! Learn the process and keep moving. Without this, you will be stuck and it will be extremely difficult to transit from where you are to the world of results. Learn to put the pieces together, and spend an hour a day focusing on working this gigantic jigsaw puzzle. You’ll be surprised you could be an expert in what you do, but for heaven’s sake, don’t cause people GDS!

I agree 1000% with the Champion Stuart
As a Proven Internet Expert it really
aggravates me that these liars
sell stuff to innocent people
who truly want to build an on-line
business. Alexa ranking says it all
if it is high – don’t listen to them.
Thanks Stuart – You are a Champion!

So, whose problem is it – the “guru” or the one with GDS? If the latter, how to cure GDS? Any tips on how to spot people with GDS, or rather the “gurus” who caused them?
Sorry for the many questions – but I’m really a “goondu” when it comes to GDS! Maybe I can give my 2 cents if you ask me about GPS instead.

I think this is especially rampant in the internet marketing arena because it’s so easy to make people actually BELIEVE you know your stuff even if you don’t.
Discretion is very necessary but newbies usually don’t realize they’re not trusting the right people and go on all the way until they hit a dead end and conclude internet marketing is a huge huge scam and all internet marketers are liars

Hey John,
Great to see you on here. I’ve been saying things about you in my seminars. Haha… the usual, of course. Take care, bro.

Jackoat – well, you do have a point. There are always people who succumb to GDS and are at fault themselves!!
(kick themselves in the butt)
Usually, people with GDS are those who don’t seek out knowledge and get things to work. I’m really empathetic toward them, not because they are stupid or anything, but because there’s just so much more that can be done from the LEARNER’s standpoint.
I mean, if people are confused, they must understand how to take responsbiility and pick up the learning themselves. Fortunately, I’ve picked up the skills, and will be sharing them in my upcoming books. There’s one on internet marketing, and the other on the process of modeling great people and their minds.

Hey Kang,
You’re right – it IS one huge scam… SO FAR. I don’t like the feeling, so that’s one of the reasons why I’m doing the Internet Marketing Academy instead of just short term courses. I think the 3 month time frame will help me to sift out the serious learners versus those who think they can get ahead playing with fire…

Wow, I see John as one of my earlier mentors
Stuart, you go man, so far in Singapore, you’re the only person I’ve seen who’s in the internet marketing niche who actually gives out useful information for free, and you have the leverage of already being a well-established figure of authority with much credibility.
So gogogo man.
Just one suggestion. Maybe you could tell everyone more about slightly more advanced stuff. Practical tips on niche marketing for example. I’m not part of any of your courses, but your free materials seem to be catered to the newest of the newbies,( like how to build a blog) and I think there is a need to educate them on how to APPLY this knowledge to build a business.
You have shown us several examples of successful sites, but IMHO, they’re nowhere near niche sites, and are actually very general and probably don’t rank very well in the search engines..
And the monetization models of these sites don’t seem to be very sound as well; only affiliate links scattered randomly and irrelevant adsense ads.
While it all looks very nice and good, I don’think these sites would be able to generate a good income for them.
Hey sorry for going off on a rant, my fingers just kept going.
Well from what you’ve been saying about your book, you need input from fairly experienced internet marketers? I’m not making huge thousands already, but yeah, I see myself on the right path, so if there’s anything you think I could do for the good ole’ people in the singapore internet marketing community, just drop me a mail at kangst3r[at]gmail[dot]com or drop me a pm at your forum.
Haven’t been there in a long time though

Hey Kang,
Good on ya. That’s true – there are many advanced strategies that I’m at the moment not willing to release because I’ve found more newbies rather than experienced people.
Plus on top of that, my participants in my workshops will be wondering why they paid if I had all this information available for free.
But I take your point, and it’s something I’ve been considering, and I guess I’ve done some before… just that no one really paid attention to due to the level of experience they have.

hey stuart,
yeah, it irks me even more to see non-guru claiming to be experts when they have nothing much to show for.
Or worse yet, claiming to be no. 1 in what they do thinking they are the best and not paying to the ‘real’ gurus around.
In any case, I fully agree on the importance on how to learn!
You rocks man!
Cheers,
