Broadband in Singapore: Front Page News

I read with intrigue the front page news article by Bryan Lee about the broadband penetration rate in Singapore (52%), Hong Kong (62%) and South Korea (70%). I think it’s fantastic as an opportunity for those of you who are planning on using the Internet to sell your services – sell to a different country that has a high uptake on broadband usage! In fact, I think that article is very useful. It’s asking us: do we need 1GBps transfer rates? I know some of you are using SCV (which, by the way is crappy in my humble opinion – at night when I need it most, it takes 20 seconds to load one page) which touts 1.5mbps. Imagine you had speed a thousand times faster. Haha… then my videos like the ones I produce at www.SpeakingExcellence.com won’t have to be compressed the way I do, and rendering for compressed video for me will be a thing of the past. 1gbps will give us a lot more option to do the things we’ve always wanted to do: multi-way video conference calls. This is something that is real, that will cost money, but will be a powerful enough to change the face of the internet. So, if you are a software developer, what will you do to plan for this? It’s just on the horizon – maybe 3 years from now, ADSL and Cable will be a thing of the past, just like 56kbps was. Can you imagine that just 10 years ago, you’d be happy to surf at 28.8kbps on a dialup modem that looked like something that could kill you if it dropped on you? Gee…

Anyway, I’m waiting for them to do 1tbps (terabyte per second) so that I can finally tell people that the technology to transport people is there. Beam me up Scotty!
