An Insider’s Introduction

I normally don’t disclose my income generating streams. But I do know that this is too big for me to be selfish about. I can’t dominate a 1 billion person market. Yes, that is the market that the internet marketing community is targeting.

But let me tell you how I got on this journey in the first place. In 2003, I had a brainwave to run an IT consultancy. It was a great start. Great partners, great ideas. We wanted to help others to market their businesses and create a platform for that to happen. It came very close to reality, but we were just too ill-informed at that time. But the problem came about when I didn’t know enough about internet marketing. I wasn’t even in the right mindset. Soon after, the consultancy folded, and I couldn’t do what I set out to do. I shied away from the IT scene after that.

I did, however, stay in touch with the industry. Email letters came in from all over the world because I opted in to some newsletters from some of the best internet marketers I know.

In April 2005, my business partner, Adam Khoo, attended an internet marketing seminar by a couple of guys, Armand Morin and Alex Mandossian. These two guys have had experience in the internet world and generate tens of thousands of dollars. When I heard about them, however, I wasn’t really impressed (sorry guys). I never heard of these guys before. After all, I was hooked on the stuff that people like Mark Joyner and Corey Rudl (the late $40million internet marketing superstar) were feeding me. To me, they were the best among the best.

Then, I came to discover that the internet marketing community was blossoming in spite of the dot com crash. Most dot commers who survived the crash ended up being able to resurrect their business models and do their business by infusing direct marketing with the internet. The result was internet marketing as we know it. This community is made up of different business streams, different revenue models and many, many potential income sources that the individual can tap.

They used to think that the internet was a place that only corporate entities could tap into. Sure, companies can launch an internet marketing strategy, and I’ve helped a few of them do that. Unfortunately, it is honestly more lucrative and less of a hassle having wade through the red corporate bureaucracy to work with entrepreneurs.

This is the opportunity. Individuals can earn much higher levels of income on the internet if the planning is done right. I don’t think internet marketing offers wild rewards for just sitting there and doing nothing. The effort must still be put in it. But… you can do the sitting there and doing nothing part after the essential hard work has been done.

What exactly is internet marketing?

Internet marketing is a way of reaching customers through the internet. It has many different forms, and certainly many different strategies that make internet marketing work. It’s draw is that any individual can use different revenue models to earn a decent four to five figure income from internet marketing. Seasoned internet marketers who learn tips and tricks can generate over six figure incomes within a matter of days.

How is this done?

The basic premise is that you have to know mathematics. Based on proportion and probability, you will find that more and more people end up being able to sell. If you only have 10 potential leads, there’s no way you can sell anything, especially if your conversion rate (the percentage of efficiency of turning leads into customers) is at 1%. What’s 1% of 10 people? Nothing!

But the amazing ability for people on the internet to scale is massive. An individual could potentially reach out to niche markets worth hundreds of millions of dollars. And it literally takes some time and effort with bare minimum levels of income.

There are too many sources of revenue you can get from the internet, so I’ll only mention the few that are most common.

1. Sell your own products or services.

Nowadays, being able to accept credit card transactions are a common thing. Internet savvy surfers will have a credit card ready to buy – because they are surfing specifically to buy. Gone are the days of credit card fraud and uncertainty. Most online payment gateways have better fraud prevention facilities now than they had just a year ago. So, you can create your own product and sell.

Create my own product?

Well, the first place to begin is an information product. You will want to create an information product that gives very high value for money. These books fetch a premium in the market because there is a high demand online, but no supply. Google, the search engine, receives 250 million viewers every day. If you look at it that way, yes! Long before the history of the civilized world, middlemen had a way of making money from commissions and agency fees. Middlemen knew where to find the buyers and sellers. This is important. With the hundreds of millions of internet searchers basically doing a search, they may not find exactly what they need. So you, as an agent, use powerful direct marketing approaches to bring to the market a useful product or service. In exchange for the information and the link-up, you find yourself getting paid for it.

3. Be a licensed reseller.

You can be a licensed reseller for other people’s goods and services. If you know how, you can be wildly successful. Examples of this include retail shops online that basically resell brand names. 4. Build a portal with important and useful information.

Never seen a portal before? Well, you probably just didn’t know about it. Look at www.amazon.com. This is a hybrid information portal as well as a specialized search engine. It started with books, but now it has EVERYTHING. People buy from it every single day.

5. Use a blog.

What? A blog can earn you money? Certainly it can. In fact, most people who are professional bloggers will tell you that earning your keep on the internet is easy. All it takes is effective content, something beneficial for your “fans” and a way to earn money, including affiliate marketing. Content is king for now, and if you have original content, you can have a wildly popular blog or website!

“Too Good To Be True?”

That’s exactly the thought that popped into my head. I had no idea that it would be big. I was skeptical. You have to understand that I’m the kind of skeptic that gets involved with my skepticism just to make sure I’m not wrong. So I dove into learning. It was a 5 month, 8 hours a day (I slept less) venture for me turning myself into an expert in these resources.

So, my first step – I decided I’d do a test run to see how I can begin small. I started off REALLY small. My first paycheck was $17.

Wow!

Now, you have to understand. My expectation was to earn $0. Zilch. But when I actually received a physical check, I was not only stunned, I started working really, really hard. The fact is I can get paid. It was mind blowing. Using simple strategies and learning a lot from all the experts on the internet, my next paycheck in the next two weeks blossomed to a tidy $574.10.

Are there Pitfalls?

Sure there are. And anyone would be lying if they told you that there is a guarantee in life for anything. Even if there is a guarantee, they absorb the risk when something doesn’t work. Often, that guarantee is a way to market and reduce the perception of risk as well.

I’ve encountered pitfalls on the internet, and I have been burned a couple of times. But those lessons made me wiser and smarter. I can circumvent them, and I really wish I had known of people who could have told me about these problems and pitfalls way before I encountered them. I would have saved myself a small fortune!

Incidentally, I also used the same strategies to launch seminars at my training company, the Adam Khoo Learning Technologies Group Pte Ltd. With the amount of information I amassed, I multiplied conversion rates by 400% by implementing strategies I had learnt about internet marketing.

I realized then that the internet marketing strategies were not just about the internet. They were really about the marketing. So before you get turned off by the idea you have to sit behind a computer all day and write codes, internet marketing is for everyone, and things you are not competent is can be outsourced. Outsourcing is a fancy term for saying that you can get other people to do your dirty work for you by paying them a fee.

I wrote a book, “33 Killer Persuasion Tactics”, and all the typing and research was professionally done by my ghost writer. It was completed in less than a month, with about 2 hours a day work put into it during that month.
